5 Things to Consider When Looking for a Coach

Hiring a coach is not like picking up a candy bar when you’re craving chocolate - just grab any one at the store and you’re set!

Coaching is an investment in you, your career, and your future.

Before hiring a coach, here are 5 important factors to consider before your introductory call:

  1. Why are you seeking a coach? What issue(s) do you want to work on?
The more specific you are about your needs, the better the coach can match her experience to your goals.

  2. Why are you seeking coaching now? What is your timeline for starting/completing coaching?
Are you working toward a specific promotion? Want to develop a skill that will help you get promoted, or support you as you move into senior levels, or to the C-suite?

Or do you want to work on a specific presentation you need to deliver in the future? The more lead time, the better.

  3. Are you and the coach a fit for each other?
A coach’s experience and expertise matter. Ideally, you’ll hire a coach who has worked with others in your field, within your specialty, or with others who have had similar challenges. Not all coaches will be a fit. You want one who can confidently support you, and whose coaching style works for you.

Talk to more than one coach before making a decision.

  4. How much are you willing to invest?
Not just money - how much of your time?

Different coaches offer different options. The work I do is comprehensive, and I look at what’s going on internally to help make public speaking easier for you; this is not something that can be remedied in an hour. Coaching is not a quick fix. My coaching process takes place over a series of weeks with easy assignments between meetings to keep building your skills when we are not meeting.

Valuable coaching will be worth it and reflect its price point. Actionable coaching will be an investment in you, your work, and your future.

  5. Are you willing to do the work?
This is the other side of the coin. A solid coach will give you actions to take, honest and tactful feedback, and reflect your progress. But you need to do the work to see the results.
