Preparation is your secret weapon in persuasive presentations or meetings.

I was so happy to reconnect with Kwame Christian of the American Negotiation Institute. We sat down to talk about why prepartion matters, and how it can be the difference between a strong, confident, persuasive speech, and a weak, unprepared one.

Three huge benefits of preparing a meeting or preparation and tailoring it for your audience:

  1. You’ll feel more confident, and appear more confident.
Knowing the content in your head is nowhere near as supportive (to you, the speaker) as taking the time to prepare is. Thinking it through in your head does nothing to strengthen your speech or your ask. Verbally running through your points, however, will give you the practice to feel strong and confident when it’s go time.

  2. Preparing for your audience increases the likelihood they’ll buy in.
Planning for (and thinking about) your audience ahead of time allows you to meet them where they’re at. You’re more likely to listen to someone who understands where you’re at…so why not be the speaker who asks questions about your audience to find out where they’re at?

  3. Questions allow you to find out what’s important to them.
If you’re not sure what is important to your audience, ask. And just because you “know your team” doesn’t mean you don’t need to prepare.
