Remembering dolly parton (and one particular speech)
Well, we lost another legend yesterday. Dolly Parton passed away at the age of 80. 😢
I listened to Dolly growing up, in both my parents’ respective homes. When “9 to 5” came out (the original) I begged my older cousin to take me. So yesterday’s new saddened me.
I’m eager to make a Reaction Video about her commencement speech to University of Tennessee in 2009, but I honestly can’t do it without crying just yet.
So. Here for you to enjoy are Dolly’s speech ^ above, and my thoughts on what she masters in this speech.
The 3 Best Elements in Dolly Parton’s 2009 Commencement Speech
Humor. Ms. Parton lovingly pokes fun at herself, her size, and what her late husband might’ve said at the 18-minute mark.
Repetition. She uses repetition to underscore the themes of her speech, and what she wants the audience to remember.
She uses parallel references to make a concept stick.
A clear call to action: “Care more.”
When I was teaching at Loyola University, I urged my graduating students to think beyond “go out and get a job and make a lot of money.” Translation: What else can you do to help someone else in life? And Ms. Parton urges the same to her audience.
This speech is timeless. Give it a listen.
Rest in power, Ms. Parton.
