Speaking Voice Too Monotone? Here’s how to fix it.
Monotone isn’t a personality trait—it’s a delivery problem. The good news: It’s easily fixable.
If you feel like your speaking voice is too monotone, then you’re probably onto something.
Voice inflection is important because your listeners need contrast. They need vocal variety. Same tone throughout = audience loses interest.
Many of my executive clients tell me, “I’m monotone,” but what’s really going on is that they’re flat. Or static. Either way, what I share here is an easy fix for any of these issues.
Some simple tips to keep in mind:
Your audience needs contrast.
Change your tone when your thought changes. If your voice isn’t shifting, you’re probably reading—not speaking.
Use pauses. Leave intentional space so your audience can keep up and lean in. (psst - this also allows the “processors” time to think and take in your point.)

Exercise to break your “monotone” habit:
Pull out your phone. Open the Voice Memo or Voice Recorder app. (Yes, really.) HIT RECORD.
NOW: Read the sentence below in your normal voice, with no tone, no emotion:
“Dave’s going to be late for his flight.”
Now, read the sentence again (and again) but going UP 👆on the word underlined in each sentence below:
“Dave’s going to be late for his flight.”
“Dave’s going to be late for his flight.”
“Dave’s going to be late for his flight.”
“Dave’s going to be late for his flight.”
“Dave’s going to be late for his flight.”
Now listen back to your rounds. What do you notice?
Take what you learned, and apply to those speeches + presentations that really matter.
