[video] How to Write a (Good) maid of honor/best man speech

Don’t be that obnoxious BM or MOH who gives the drunken “I love you, man!” speech.

Are you the best man or maid of honor at an upcoming wedding?

Or are you the officiant or family or loved ones who will be giving a speech?

I’ve been to too many weddings where the speeches/toasts were obviously not planned, practiced, or prepared.

And by that, I mean the speaker (MOH/BM/other) was fairly tipsy and said some sloppy version of: “Ohmigawd I luuuuvvvv yoo so much man…..Ohmigawd I can believe yer gettin’ married….ohmigod….”

Don’t be that guy or that girl or that person.

Scroll down for some easy tips to get you started on your wedding speech or toast.

Giving a toast at a wedding it a huge honor. It’s also a HUGE (but exciting!) challenge. I can help you write and deliver a memorable wedding toast.

3 Simple Tips for Writing Your Maid of Honor or Best Man Speech

  1. Keep it short! Five minutes max.
Everyone is here (theoretically) for the couple getting married, not to hear you babble. Short = memorable. Prepare and practice multiple times - with a timer.

  2. Open strong and set the tone.
Begin with a warm greeting and set the tone. ("Good evening, everyone. I’m Samantha, Jane’s sister. Welcome!”) And don’t forget to say your name and your relationship, especially if it’s a large wedding. Tell the audience who you are!

  3. Avoid inside jokes.
Rather than inside jokes, or references that only a few attendees will get, share a heartfelt anecdote that illustrates your relationship to the couple and why this moment matters to you.
