[video] Political speech fail - and what you can learn from it

Yes, your tone matters when you speak. One lobbyist found out the hard way.

At this year’s CPAC, speaker Matt Schlapp asked the wrong question with the wrong tone. Guess how that went.

Welcome back to Speech of the Fortnight!

Every 2 weeks (or more, or less) I’ll share my thoughts on a real public speech.

Recently, lobbyist Matt Schlapp went viral for the wrong reason. He accidentally got a crowd to cheer when he didn’t want cheers. (Play video [w/captions] above to see what happened.) Thanks to Jon Stewart who said some of it better than I could have. Your audience responds to your tone!

Something I liked:

  • He was enthusiastic. And that is the right tone when you want to whip up a crowd!

What I would’ve done differently:

  • Not told the audience how to behave. This is one of my pet peeves - when the audience doesn’t give the reaction you want, don’t blame them or ding them. The speaker is the leader of the room. If you don’t like what you’re getting, look at what you’re giving.

Join me again in a few weeks for another Speech of the Fortnight!
